Malignant Mesothelioma Linked to Johnson & Johnsons Baby Powder
Over the last year, Johnson & Johnson has been held responsible for concealing that their talc baby powder had asbestos fibers and could potentially cause malignant mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly form of asbestos cancer that can start around the heart, lungs or abdomen. The lawsuit claims that the talc-based product was contaminated with asbestos and the company was aware of the dangers it posed to consumers.

Talc Baby Powder Mesothelioma Verdicts
In April 2018, a New Jersey man was awarded $117 million when Johnson & Johnson was found responsible for him getting diagnosed with mesothelioma due years of using the company’s product.
Another talcum powder mesothelioma trial is being heard in the state of South Carolina, filed by the family of a now-deceased woman who developed pericardial mesothelioma after decades of using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder.
Johnson & Johnson has denied that their talc has ever contained asbestos, but internal company documents revealed in the New Jersey case show that a company scientist warned of the company’s potential liability should it ever be discovered that their product contained asbestos.
What is Malignant Mesothelioma?
Malignant mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers that are breathed or absorbed into the body. In most cases, the fibers end up in the lungs or the lining around the lungs. These fibers are nearly indestructible and over many years tear through the lungs causing lung damage which may lead to lung or mesothelioma cancer.
Approximately 3,500 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year and approximately 4 times that number develop asbestos-related lung cancer. Though the majority of people diagnosed with the disease have a known occupational exposure to the carcinogenic material, there are those for whom the source of their exposure is less obvious.
For those people, the exposure likely came from second had or “household” exposure. In other words, their exposure to asbestos resulted from being around other people or places where an asbestos product was used or being removed. Talc is an example of a previously unidentified source of asbestos exposure in the home.
Talc Baby Powder Linked to Ovarian Cancer
Johnson & Johnson is also currently named in over 6,000 pending lawsuits accusing their talcum powder products of causing ovarian cancer. These suits and several that have already been resolved in the last few years point to numerous studies that showed a link between the use of talc in the female genital area and the occurrence of deadly cancer.
Johnson & Johnson has specifically marketed their powder products for feminine hygiene purposes. The lawsuits that have already been resolved have resulted in victims being awarded judgments ranging from $55 million to $417 million.
The laws regarding injuries caused by exposure to asbestos are extremely complex and specific and require legal representation by attorneys with a high degree of knowledge and experience.
